Pastor David Adebisi reflects on his life and ministry as he clocks 66 years old. Having been raised from a Muslim background, David Adebisi shares with Christian Benefits how he accepted Jesus Christ over 40 years ago and also how in his walk with the Lord over the years he eschews greed, fame and inordinate ambition, which he points as the major reasons for the compromise of many believers today, including ministers of God.
Adebisi, who is now the founder and senior pastor of Christ Achievers Church, Egbeda, Lagos, was a carpenter before receiving the call of God into ministry. However, at a point he backslidden from the faith when he returned to Lagos in 1988 and continued his carpentry work until 1999 when he retraced his steps and completely yielded himself to the Lord.
“I am a child of God sustained by the grace and the mercy of God. I am from a Muslim background. My encounter with Christ was by the grace of God. I attended The Apostolic Church. I had received a tract from the church during their evangelism. This subsequently led me to receiving Jesus Christ into my life thereafter in 1976.
“My growth in the Lord received a boost when I moved from Lagos to Ibadan in November 1977 and joined a group called Egbe Imole Aye. I was mentored by Pastor S.I Lawal of Christ Apostolic Church (CAC). He really helped my growth in Christ. I had water baptism in March 1979.” Pastor Adebisi shared with Christian Benefits. He then disclosed that he was called by God into the ministry in 1984 with the mandate to speak the truth to people; making them conscious of the return of Jesus Christ.
‘I had the call in 1984. When things went awry I backslide and moved to Lagos in 1988. I continued my carpentry work until 1999 when I retraced my steps and completely yielded myself to the Lord. There is a difference between a person called by God and a person who called himself. The calling of God upon my life is to speak the truth to the people; making them conscious of the soon return of Jesus Christ. I am conscious of the soon return of Christ too. This makes me eschew greed, fame and inordinate ambition which are the major pitfalls of many believers today, including ministers of God.
“I don’t do more than I can. I don’t chase after winds. It was greed that led many believers today, including servants of God to inglorious situations. I’m not greedy. Yes, there are struggles both in life and ministry. Every man faces struggles in life. The struggle experiences are like the struggles of a pregnant woman who forgets all struggles as soon as she gives birth to the baby. Our goal is to spend eternity with Christ and that is the message I preach. Our mandate is the kingdom of God; to teach and lead people to live a holy and righteous life. The Lord called me to the children of the kingdom of light. He called me to train the leaders to lead’
“We hold a Leadership Conference in July every year. The theme of this year’s Leadership Conference last July 2024 was “Understanding The Will of God.” We hold CALM Bible Institute. It is a Bible school where people who want to learn more about the Word of God and knowleged about ministerial work are being taught. God endowed me with all the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The one I cherish most is teaching in the light of the truth. God endowed me with the gift of teaching for the perfection of the saints and the body of Christ.
Finally, Pastor David Adebisi, while reflecting on his life now at 66 years, says he does not look up to any human as role model outside Christ. He said like Apostle Paul he had learned how to abase and how to abound while noting that no man can be trusted. “Some ministers have no depths. One Yoruba adage says one assesses the attires of the person that offers to cloth one. At 66 years old I have many reasons and many things to thank God for. I am grateful to God for life and sustenance. Some of the people with whom I started are no more. At the time I thought it was over the Lord was gracious to sustain me,” Adebisi profoundly expresses gratitude God.
