A mental health expert and coordinator of Oyo State Primary Health Care Board, Mrs. Abodunrin Funmilayo, has stated that regular sexual intercourse between couples is a good exercise for  healthy living and also a panacea to sleeplessness.

Mrs. Abodunrin, representing a medical consultant, Dr. Robertson Olugbade Omotajo, stated this in her health talk on “Old Age-Related Diseases” at the first reunion of the class of 1997 alumni of Department of Mass Communication of The Polytechnic, Ibadan and the class’silver jubilee graduation from the polytechnic, held at Jubilee Conference Centre, Oke Ado, Ibadan, Oyo state.

Abodunrin advised the aging to go for regular medical checkup as at when due, saying that “like car owners regularly visit the mechanic workshop to service their cars, our kidney, livers and other vital organs in our body need regular check up and constant servicing, particularly from age 40 in order for us to enjoy a good health.” She shared statistics that revealed that about 150,000 people die on a daily basis worldwide with two third of the death caused by old-age related diseases.

The Oyo State Primary Health Care Board coordinator observed that the rates of depression and suicide cases are on the increase today “because no one cares for another again unlike in the past when family ties were strong. So, as alumni, as you are aging you must care for one another. You must be your brother’s and your sister’s keeper in order to prevent one another from old-age-related diseases,” she advised.

The mental health expert prescribed for the aging from age 40: vegetable diets, balanced diet, fruits diets, adequate water drinking, regular exercises, adequate rest of at least 6 hours of sleep daily, weight control, no smoking, no alcohol, stress reduction, regular medical check up for the care of the heart, care of the liver, care of the kidney and care of other vital organs in the body and engage in activities that increase both health span and life span like regular/healthy sexual intercourse. “To increase your life span, you must first increase your health span” she concluded.

Mr. Kayode Akinpelu, also an alumni and a retired lecturer at The Poly Ibadan Mass communication department charged his former students on the importance, the significance and the benefits of alumni. He shared his experiences and benefits from two of the many alumni bodies he said he belongs, and then encouraged the class to sustain their school friendship.

While lauding the class for the initiative of reuniting after 25 years of parting ways, Akinpelu noted that friendships made in school are more beneficial than friendship made out of school. Therefore, he charged the class to care for the welfare of one another, create various chapters of the alumni for the members to be closely knitted and to always watch the back of one another.
