Referring to Matthew 27:18, he observed that envy played a role in the religious leaders’ decision to hand Jesus over to Pilate.

The cleric further explained that people might oppose another person because of the promises and revelations associated with their future, particularly when such visions challenge their expectations. He cited Joseph’s experience in Genesis 37:5 as an illustration.

Afolabi listed the desire for another person’s position, influence, opportunities or recognition as the fourth possible reason for opposition. He referred to 1 Samuel 18:8–9, which describes King Saul’s displeasure and jealousy following the public praise of David.

He also identified distinctiveness in character, wisdom, excellence and spiritual gifts as factors that could attract hostility.

Using Daniel’s experience in Daniel 6:3–4 as an example, the General Overseer noted that Daniel’s exceptional qualities attracted the attention of his colleagues, who sought grounds to accuse him.

The article further highlighted resentment over another person’s progress and blessings as a possible source of bitterness. Afolabi cited Isaac’s prosperity in Genesis 26:12–14, noting that his success provoked envy among the Philistines.

He also warned against pride and a sense of entitlement, explaining that some people might resent another person’s achievements because they believe they deserve the same opportunities or recognition.

Citing Esther 5:11–13 and 6:6–11, he referred to Haman’s pride in his wealth and position and his hostility towards Mordecai, whose eventual honour exposed the futility of Haman’s ambitions.

Urging Christians to remain steadfast, Afolabi encouraged believers not to abandon their God-given uniqueness, compromise their values or engage in unnecessary competition because of opposition.

He stressed the importance of humility, faithfulness, wisdom and contentment, urging Christians to trust God’s timing and remain committed to their individual assignments.

The cleric concluded with a prophetic declaration based on Isaiah 54:17, affirming that no weapon formed against God’s purpose would ultimately prevail.

He prayed for believers to receive grace to fulfil their divine assignments without fear, maintain their peace amid jealousy and unhealthy competition, and exercise wisdom in responding to opposition.

He also declared that their gifts would make room for them and that their lives would glorify Jesus Christ.

Apostle Dr Joshua Afolabi (JP), General Overseer of Palace Fire Chapel, Lagos, has identified seven reasons people may oppose others, including jealousy over their gifts, resentment of their success, and competition for positions, influence and recognition.
