The General Overseer of God’s Mercy Revival Ministries (GOMERM), Dr. James Akanbi, has expressed deep concern over emerging political developments in Nigeria which, he says, if not carefully managed, may threaten the nation’s democratic stability, unity, and peaceful coexistence.

In a statement issued to the press shortly after the just- concluded Covenant Day 2026 programme of the church, Dr. Akanbi called on political actors across the country to exercise restraint, responsibility, and patriotism in their pursuit of power, particularly as the 2027 general elections approach.

He acknowledged that political alignments and realignments are a normal part of democratic processes. However, he cautioned that such strategies must not come at the expense of national peace, security, and the collective interest of Nigerians.

“There are growing and troubling signs suggesting that Nigeria may be drifting towards a one-party state, judging by recent political maneuvers ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly the presidential race. While political strategy is legitimate in a democracy, it must never undermine the foundations of our nation or jeopardize unity and stability.”

Dr. Akanbi therefore urged all political stakeholders to place the national interest above personal ambition and ensure that their actions strengthen, rather than weaken, Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

The cleric also issued a strong advisory message to church leaders nationwide, calling for dignity, restraint, and spiritual responsibility in political engagement.

“I urge fellow church leaders to conduct themselves with utmost dignity and spiritual discipline. While I am not opposed to clergy participation in civic and political matters, such involvement must reflect godly character and wisdom. The Church must avoid a repeat of the 2023 experience marked by reckless political utterances and questionable prophecies that brought disrepute to the Body of Christ.”

He emphasized that the Church must continue to serve as a moral compass for the nation by promoting peace, truth, and righteousness, especially during politically sensitive periods.

In conclusion, Dr. Akanbi called on all Nigerians to remain vigilant, law-abiding, and committed to the unity and progress of the country.

“A stable and prosperous Nigeria is a collective responsibility. Now more than ever, we must act with wisdom, restraint, and a deep sense of patriotism,” the amiable preacher concluded.
