PRESS STATEMENT

The Church and Its Responsibility in National Affairs

The attention of the Christian community has been drawn to ongoing arguments suggesting that the Church and its leaders have no mandate to engage in matters of governance or national discourse.

This position is both historically and scripturally inaccurate.

From biblical times, spiritual leaders have played pivotal roles in shaping national direction and holding authority accountable. Jesus Christ addressed the religious and socio-political order of His time through His engagement with the Sadducees and Pharisees. The prophet Samuel confronted King Saul over his disobedience, while Moses stood before Pharaoh to demand justice and freedom for the oppressed.

These precedents clearly affirm that divine mandate does not end at the pulpit. Rather, it extends into the moral and ethical oversight of society.

It is therefore erroneous to suggest that God is no longer concerned with the affairs of nations or that He does not communicate His will to the Church regarding the state of the nation. The Church remains a vital moral compass and a prophetic voice in society.

Church leaders who engage with government institutions must not limit their roles to ceremonial visits or passive interactions. They carry the responsibility to speak truthfully and courageously on issues affecting the people and the nation at large.

At a time when Nigeria faces complex socio-political challenges, the silence of the Church cannot be justified. Silence, in critical moments, is not neutrality—it is complicity.

The Church must rise to its responsibility: to guide, to correct, and to speak truth to power in the interest of righteousness, justice, and national well-being.
