Apostle Dr. Angela Ohakosim has called for greater participation of people of integrity in politics, saying responsible engagement in public affairs is necessary for societal transformation and sustainable development.
Ohakosim, who made the call in an interview with Christian Benefits Magazine, said politics plays a significant role in shaping decisions on education, infrastructure, economic opportunities, social welfare and community development.
According to her, people with strong ethical values should not completely withdraw from public affairs but should contribute their experience, leadership abilities and ideas to improving society.
“My involvement therefore comes from a desire to contribute my experience, leadership capacity, strategic thinking and commitment to human development to the public space,” she said.
Explaining her political philosophy, the cleric identified integrity, accountability, inclusion, human capital development, empowerment and responsible leadership as the principles guiding her approach to public service.
She maintained that leadership should be measured by the value it creates in people’s lives, adding that public office should be regarded as a responsibility to serve rather than an avenue for personal advancement.
Ohakosim identified women and children’s welfare, youth development, education, entrepreneurship, capacity building and community advancement as areas of particular interest.
She expressed the desire to contribute to a society where citizens can fulfil their potential, institutions function responsibly and leadership remains people-centred.
On women’s participation in politics and leadership, she argued that women should have opportunities to contribute meaningfully to governance, business, education and other sectors of national development.
She, however, stressed the importance of preparation, saying women aspiring to leadership positions should develop their intellectual, spiritual, emotional and professional capacities.
“Visibility must be preceded by capacity,” she said, urging women to prepare themselves to provide practical solutions when opportunities for leadership arise.
Ohakosim said balancing ministry with political involvement requires discipline, planning, delegation and effective time management. She added that her Christian convictions provide a moral compass for her engagements in ministry, leadership and public service.
She also advised young women interested in politics and public service to prioritise education, competence, character, discipline and integrity rather than pursuing positions without adequate preparation.
“Discover your purpose, develop your capacity and guard your character,” she counselled.
She further urged aspiring leaders to remain teachable, build meaningful relationships and continue learning, stressing that although positions may be temporary, the impact of responsible leadership can endure across generations.
